If you or someone you know is in need of a hearing aid, it is best to start out with a hearing test at an otolaryngologist, an ear nose and throat doctor, to determine the severity of a person’s hearing loss.  You will also want to discuss what options are available including a digital hearing aid which are technologically advanced hearing aid models that have tiny computers inside, usually something no bigger than the tip of your finger.

First, an otolaryngologist will rule out any tumors or bacterial infections that could affect a person’s hearing.  In the doctor’s office there should also be an audiologist on staff who fits the hearing aids and makes any adjustments to their sound quality once the hearing aid has been chosen and fitted.

It is a good idea to find a hearing doctor and an audiologist who offer therapy or rehabilitation classes after you buy your hearing aid in order to help you get used to such a life altering piece of equipment. Like with anything new, getting used to a hearing aid will take a person some time; however once they begin to realize how much better they can hear, they will wonder why they did not purchase a hearing aid sooner.

On a person’s first visit to the otolaryngologist, they will undergo several different hearing tests in a soundproof booth, and once the doctor has determined their degree of hearing loss, they will be given several choices of hearing aids in different styles and models.  Some of the hearing aids go over the back of the ear with a small tube coming around in front of the ear and connecting to a mold inside the ear; others contain all the necessary hearing components within the tiny mold that fits inside a person’s ear.  Hearing aid manufacturers want their customers to be as comparable and normal as possible so they also include on most hearing aid models what’s known as a ‘telecoil’ button which allows the person to hear more clearly on the telephone.
